Louzhang 楼长 - The Form of Spine

Artist, architect and experimental musician Louzhang dives headfirst into the boundless field of ambient music on his debut album "The Form of Spine" released with SOTI. While the musician’s touch was present in electronic trio Irreverent Trio (who also released an album with SOTI last year), here he leans into the dissonance of electronic music, injecting the foundation of ambient music with something jarring, mammoth, and absorbing, allowing the structures to arise in atypical fashion. An ‘opera of chaos’ that taps into electronic music’s more unruly tendencies with probing fascinating curiosity.

soviet pop - two small works: continuous and discrete

Soviet Pop, the electronic-acoustic side project from Li Qing and Li Weisi (of Carsick Cars fame) returns to their experimental roots on the Aloe Records’ newest release - aptly named two small works: continuous and discrete. While the duo’s sound was taken on many forms and sounds over the years, their latest is as abstract and and subdued as they come - putting as much emphasis on the process as in the acoustics - as musical devices impede on one another in sonically curious ways. The first piece deals with the interaction of ‘frequencies, overtones and resonances’ while the second piece weds various metronomes against/wit ha pedal cymbal.

Wu Zhuoling 吴卓玲 - Uncharted (云深不知处)

Chengdu based producer Wu Zhuoling, known for her ambient-laced soundscapes and multi-layered dance rhythms, journeys into the post-apocalyptic future on her latest EP -Uncharted. Lush in its details, and conjuring an atmosphere that’s both delicate and taut, it’s the closest that the prolific producer has come to soundtracking a film. Flowing and ebbing with wide-eyed wonder whist swelling with an emotional ethereal undercurrent, it’s a cerebral cosmic gem - one whose exploratory nature might just move you in more ways than one.
